Let’s talk Christmas sports toys. Christmas morning … the opening of the toys. Is that the best feeling a kid can have? OK, some adults, too. But a kid, knowing this package has socks, that one a shirt, and oh, no … pajamas. OK, a book, maybe a poster … wait a minute, this one could be a toy. Rip the paper and the kid’s eyes light up as he sees it … a toy. A sports toy.
Let’s talk Bowl games. The college football bowl season is upon us. This year there will be 43 different college bowl games running from Dec. 17 through Jan. 10, 2022, concluding with the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship.
In last week’s 2021 UIL Texas Football State Championships - 2021 Football Conference 5A D2 tournament game, between the Boerne-Champion Chargers (9-3) and Liberty Hill Panthers, the game was won on the ground in dominating fashion, with Liberty Hill scoring early and often en route to a 51-14 victory.
Let’s Talk Sportsmanship and respect. Sports is about competition and doing your best on the field or in the arena and not getting off the gas until victory is assured. Fresh from a 40-point victory in their season opener, the Boerne-Champion girls basketball team built on that and rolled again with a 52-point romp over West Marcos High School, 78-26.
After a bye week, the Greyhounds looked less-oiled than usual, but still won their seventh game in a row, coming from behind with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to take down Canyon Lake (6-5), 28-21 in a UIL 4A Bi-District Playoff game at Wemberley Texan Stadium, last Thursday.
The Boerne-Champion Chargers got back in the win column and improved to 7-2 this season (3-1 in District League play) with a 35-28 win over Floresville (7-2).
On senior night, the upper-classmen had big games, and so did their under-class teammates, as the Boerne Greyhounds won their sixth game in a row and improved to 7-2 on the season with a 41-6 romp over LaVernia (2-7) last Friday.
Let’s talk sports nicknames. To add color and electricity to the game, whether it is baseball, basketball, football or hockey … an athlete often is attached to a nickname that seems to transcend the sport and the athletes themselves.
