Boerne Greyhounds need 4th quarter comeback to beat Canyon Lake 28-21

After a bye week, the Greyhounds looked less-oiled than usual, but still won their seventh game in a row, coming from behind with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to take down Canyon Lake (6-5), 28-21 in  a UIL 4A Bi-District Playoff game at Wemberley Texan Stadium, last Thursday.

The Rashawn Galloway show took command when it counted, as the senior quarterback was good for 394 all-purpose yards, of the 418 yards the ‘Hounds gained.

Canyon Lake struck first, 7 minutes in, on a 5-yard run and the Greyhounds got even with a minute left in the first on a 15-yard sprint out by Galloway.

Midway through the second quarter, Canyon Lake took a 14-7 lead on a short run and took a two-possession lead, 21-7, into the locker room at halftime on a 10-yard run with a minute left.

Boerne held Canyon Lake on its first possession of the second half, then started its comeback with a 5-yard Galloway run with 5 minutes left in the quarter.

Down 21-14 in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds tied it up 3 minutes in on a Galloway-to-Koby Hunter TD pass. With the score tied at 21, Boerne took the lead for the first time, and for good, on another Galloway run, this one from 15 yards out, with 4 minutes left. A fourth PAT by Justin Moore put the score at 28-21 and Boerne held from there to go home winners … again.

In the battle of stats, Canyon Lake dominated the clock, but not the field, running 71 plays and gaining 246 yards to the Greyhounds’ 55 plays for 418. CL made 22 first downs to 19 for Boerne and had the ball for 30 minutes, to only 18 minutes for Boerne. CL gained 45 yards on 5 of 12 passing but were dwarfed by the steady rifle of Galloway, who completed 16 of 29 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Galloway gained 107 himself on 16 carries, and the Canyon Lake rushers gained 201 yards on 28 carries.

Galloway found senior wideout Hunter five times for 128 yards, including a 50-yard bomb.

On defense, senior Will Person was a tackle machine, making 8 solos and 7 assists for 15 total tackles. Senior Tanner Lundy was in on 13 (4 solos), and juniors Houston Hendrix and Landon Lestourgeon were each in on 12.

Winning their seventh game in a row, they have now outscored their opponents  384-237. They take on the Miller Buccaneers (8-3) on Friday. At Alamo Stadium in the next round of the 2021 UIL Texas Football State Championships - 2021 Football Conference 4A D1 tournament.
