The Boerne-Champion Chargers got back in the win column and improved to 7-2 this season (3-1 in District League play) with a 35-28 win over Floresville (7-2).
Rebounding from a 21-17 loss to Alamo Heights on Oct. 22, the fired-up Chargers showed intensity against the Tigers in a tight battle that was tied at 7-7 after one, and showed the Chargers ahead 21-14 at half-time. The third quarter was a scorefest, with each team scoring twice, before the defenses took over for a scoreless fourth quarter.
The win wasn’t easy as the Chargers had difficulty containing Tigers senior quarterback Braeden Fuller, who completed 22 of 32 passes for 284 yards and two TDs. When Fuller wasn’t picking up yards in the air, Floresville senior running back Dareion Murphy was running to daylight on the ground to the tune of 201 yards on 26 carries. The Tigers picked up 462 yards in total offense, but the Chargers were even more difficult to stop and gained 522 yards in total offense on the night.
Boerne Champion quarterback Karson Kaiser completed 17 of 22 passes for 266 yards and a touchdown and running back Alex Rodriguez, gained 242 yards with four touchdowns on 33 carries.
The Chargers took the lead early, with only 1:12 gone, on a five-play 75-yard drive from the opening kick-off. Rodriquez put the Chargers on the board on an 11-yard run to make it 7-0. After a long 17-yard drive by Floresville to tie the score, and a couple of defensive holds, Champion regained the lead on another TD by Rodriguez, this time from 13 yards out. After Floresville responded again to tie the score at 14-14, the Chargers took the lead just before half-time on a 5-play drive the culminated with a 22-yard break-tackle-and-sprint by Rodriguez to make it 21-14.
The Chargers had the lead in the second half and even recovered an onside kick, but a lost fumble and a missed field goal gave the Tigers multiple shots to re-tie the game, only to have the Chargers’ defense make stops as the final gun sounded.
Champion plays its regular-season finale Friday at Lockhart.
