The Chargers' win over the Mercedes Tigers (9-2) in a UIL Texas Football State Championship match-up was B-C’s third straight win and improved them to 9-2, outscoring their opponents 378-224.
In a game in which the Tigers ran 77 plays to only 50 for the Chargers, the Chargers were outgained 257 yards to 122 passing, but the B-C rushing attack – 311 yards to 170 – gave Boerne-Champion a 433-418 yardage advantage.
The Chargers were led by senior running back Alex Rodriguez, who carried on 28 of the team’s 37 rushing attempts, and gained 259 yards – the Charger has 311 on the ground. Senior quarterback Karson Kaiser completed 8 of 13 passes for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns in the air and picked up 44 yards on the ground. The Chargers took a 7-0 lead 2 minutes in on a 1-yard shove by Kaiser. They made it 14-0 5 minutes later on a Kaiser-to-Jones pass from the 45. After giving up a TD, B-C missed a field goal but struck again in the second quarter on a 27-yard pass from Kaiser to Brandon to go up 21-7. The two teams traded scores and after allowing a 9-yard TD run, the Chargers struck right back on a 98-yard kick-off return by Brandon to make it 28-14.
A touchdown and a field goal before halftime put the score at 28-23, Chargers. After a scoreless third quarter, in which each team turned the ball over, the Tigers scored with 7 minutes left on a 3-yard run to take a 29-28 lead. It only took 3 minutes of Rodriquez running the ball for the Chargers to re-take the lead on a 3-yard run by Brandon. A 2-point conversion pass from Kaiser to Rodriguez made it 36-29 and that score stood up.
The Chargers take on the Liberty Hill Panthers (9-2) next. The Panthers own a 7-game winning streak and have outscored their opponents 494-116.
