New Friday hours available to assist students with food, insurance and more

“Oh S.N.A.P., It’s Friday!” program offers help applying for assistance

Students will have extra help applying for assistance for food, health care and other services on campus every Friday throughout the summer, starting on June 17.

During the Friday hours, students can meet with a benefits expert to determine their eligibility for various forms of assistance. The sessions take place in the Welcome Center, located on the second floor of the Moody Learning Center, 1819 North Main Avenue, from 8 a.m. until noon.

The program, called Oh S.N.A.P., it’s Friday!, aids students in applying for income-based programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); Children’s Medicaid (CHIP, a health care program for children without health insurance); the Healthy Texas Women program (providing women’s health and family planning services at no cost to eligible Texas women); and the WIC program for pregnant women and children under age 5.

The Oh S.N.A.P., It’s Friday! sessions provide an additional opportunity for students to seek help during summer hours, when campus is open Monday through Thursday. During regular business hours, students can also get help with applying for assistance at the Student Advocacy Center.

Students with a family contribution of zero on their FAFSA, those who receive Pell Grants, or students with children are likely to qualify for assistance, said Roger Narvaez, senior coordinator with the Student Success/Student Advocacy Center.

“A lot of students qualify for these programs and don’t realize it,” Narvaez said. “Filling out the forms can be a little complicated, so we will make sure student applications are accurate so the state can determine their eligibility for assistance.”

Students must bring identification; proof of address, such as a utility bill or lease agreement; and proof of income, such as their most recent pay stub.

Walk-ins are welcome or students can set up an appointment by emailing svillalobos@safoodbank.org. Appointments are available in person or online through Zoom.
