Boerne-Champion charges to 9-3 season through powerful offense

The Bourne-Champion Chargers finished a strong season in which they went to the second round of the Conference 5A Division 2 state tournament and posted a 9-3 record, including 4-1 in the district.

The Chargers attacked with a potent offense that scored 392 points compared to the opponents’ 275 points. Boerne-Champion started the season with four straight wins and also had three wins in a row before the playoff loss to Liberty Hill, according to MaxPreps.

The team’s most dominant victory of the season came against MacArthur in a 56-0 blowout. Quarterback Karson Kaiser led the Chargers' victory going 14-for-17 in the air for 301 yards and four touchdowns while throwing no interceptions.

The McArthur game was just an indication of how Kaiser would lead the Chargers all season on the offensive end. Kaiser tallied 21 touchdowns and four interceptions to go with 1,784 yards and a 62% completion rate. He had an impressive quarterback rating of 121.0 in nine games. Kaiser was also solid on the ground attack with 41 rushes for 235 yards and four touchdowns.

The rushing attack was consistently strong throughout the year, amassing 1,987 yards on 6.2 yards per carry overall. Leading the running game was senior Alex Rodriguez. In seven games, Rodriguez piled up 1,083 yards at a 7.5 yards-per-carry clip. He averaged 154.7 yards per game and put up a team-high 10 rushing scores. He also caught four passes for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore Cole Riha carried 79 times for 416 yards with four touchdowns, while junior Colin Ryan ran the ball 35 times for 185 yards and a touchdown.

Senior wide receiver Ryan Brandon was a beast on the passing attack with 55 catches for 969 yards and 15 touchdowns, which included a score from 95 yards out. He was also a kick return and punt return specialist, and led the team with 1,405 all purpose yards.

Junior wide receiver Kannon Brooks finished with 49 catches for 400 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior Griffin Jones caught 21 passes for 330 yards and three scores. Senior Davis Pike caught 18 passes, including five touchdowns, for 308 yards, averaging 17.1 yards per reception. Riha added nine catches for 99 yards. In only three games, sophomore Kaleb Krause made the best of his time with 12 catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. 

Kicker Will Wallace was an impressive 46/47 for extra points and went 4/8 for field goals including a long of 37 yards. He had 58 total points on the season.

A strong season will be built on in the off-season for the 2022 campaign.
