Boerne Greyhounds season ended by undefeated LBJ Austin in regional playoff

The Boerne Greyhounds (9-3) were coming off an eight-game winning streak, but they had the lofty task of facing undefeated LBJ Austin (13-0) in the regional playoffs where the Jaguars dominated in a 68-24 win at the Alamodome.

The Greyhounds went up 7-0 in the first quarter but LBJ Austin quickly tied up the game on a 57-yard touchdown pass by Oscar Gordon. LBJ Austin added another quick score on a 46-yard bomb to make it a 14-7 game at the end of the first quarter.

Justin Moore of the Greyhounds knocked home a field goal to keep the game close at 14-10, but in the second quarter, Sedrick Alexander took a 30-yard run all the way to the end zone to make it a 21-10 game with six minutes left in the half. About two minutes later, the Jaguars went up 28-10 on a rushing touchdown. The scoring barrage continued with a six-yard touchdown pass by Gordon just a minute later, with three minutes to go in the half, to make it a 35-10. As time was winding down Gordon tossed another touchdown pass to go up 42-10 at the half.

LBJ Austin started with the ball in the second half and wasted no time to add to the score with a another touchdown pass by Gordon, and with an extra point it was 49-10. The Greyhounds weren’t ready to back down though, with Riley Pechacek scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Koen Wolff extra point was good and it was a 49-17 game. As time wound down in the third quarter, LBJ Austin added to the lead on a rushing touchdown, but missed the PAT to put the score at 55-17.

In the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds were knocking on the end zone door, but but Pechacek fumbled near the goal line to give the ball back to the Jaguars. LBJ Austin responded with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Gordon to Trent Leary. It was Gordon’s sixth touchdown of the game. Boerne tacked on a score, but then Ali Scott of the Jaguars scored on a 15-yard run to seal the game.

It was a tough game for the Boerne Greyhounds against one of the best teams in the state in the Jaguars, whose dominant offense came out firing with 625 total yards compared to Boerne’s 389 yards. 

Leading the way for the Greyhounds was Pechacek with 29 carries for 163 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Johnpaul Castro had nine rushes for 31 yards.

Rashawn Galloway was 9-for-29 in the air with a touchdown. He threw to five different receivers including Castro, who had two catches, one for a 42-yard touchdown. He also threw to Justin Moore for a 29-yard catch; Houston Hendrix caught two for 36 yards; Pechacek ended with two receptions for 39 yards; and Koby Hunter had two catches for 45 yards.

Defensively, Hendrix tallied a sack and a blocked field goal; Jose Aparicio forced a fumble and Jacob McLaughlin recovered a fumble.
