Grabbing the lead just before halftime, Boerne-Champion (6-2, 2-1 in DL) lost a tough second-half defensive battle to Alamo Heights (8-0, 3-0), 21-17.
After a scoreless first quarter, the second quarter saw lots of action as the Chargers scored 17 points and the Mules added 14 to give Boerne-Champion a 17-14 halftime lead. The Mules put up the only second-half points on at third-quarter TD to take the lead for good, 21-17.
Alamo-Heights struck first, a minute into the second quarter, on an 11-yard pass, and went up 14-0 on a 3-yard run midway through the quarter. Charger running back Alex Rodriquez broke loose on a 52-yard run to put Boerne-Champion on the board a minute later, and with two minutes left in the half, a Charger safety made the score 14-9.
With less than a minute to go, the Chargers took the lead on a 36-yard TD pass from Karson Kaiser to Ryan Brandon. A two-point conversion by Kaiser gave the Chargers a 17-14 halftime lead.
Midway through the third quarter, the Mules regained the lead for good on a 30-yard TD pass, then the defenses took over and the Chargers’ fate was sealed.
The Chargers take on Floresville on Thursday.
