FEBRUARY 3, 2023 — Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 University Excellence Staff Awards.
Recognizing extraordinary leadership, service and contributions by UTSA staff, the awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge employees whose dedication to the university has gone above and beyond.
The deadline to submit nominations is February 17, 2023.
The University Excellence Staff Awards, together with the President’s Distinguished Faculty Awards and the President’s Distinguished Diversity Awards, will be announced at UTSA’s annual University Excellence Awards ceremony this April.

Categories for this year’s staff awards are listed below. Nominees must be a current UTSA staff member to be eligible. Nominations should encompass employee achievements from the 2022 calendar year. Additional requirements may apply for specific awards.
- Rising Star Award ($1,000 prize)
The recipient of the Rising Star Award is a new employee who has made significant contributions throughout the year to his or her area or the university community. - Leadership Award ($1,000 prize)
The Leadership Award recognizes someone who has promoted departmental and university mission and goals through job performance. - Team Spirit Award ($1,000 prize)
The recipients of this award showcase the ability to foster collaboration, communication and cooperation among colleagues internal or external to their departments. - Extra Mile Award ($1,000 prize)
The Extra Mile Award recognizes an employee who goes above and beyond to contribute to the success of UTSA through his or her outstanding contributions at work. - Order of the Roadrunner Award ($1,000 prize)
The Order of the Roadrunner Award, which is the highest honor a UTSA staff member can receive, is given for exemplary service and commitment to UTSA. - Richard S. Howe Staff Excellence in Service to Undergraduate Students Award (up to $2,000 prize)
This award is named in honor of longtime UTSA engineering professor Richard S. Howe. The award honors staff members for their outstanding commitment towards UTSA undergraduates.
In addition to the staff-only awards listed above, staff may also be nominated for the President’s Distinguished Diversity Award. These awards are bestowed upon faculty, staff and students whose work has helped the UTSA community think about and practice diversity and inclusion in creative and collaborative ways. The nomination deadline for this year’s Diversity Awards is February 11, 2023.
