The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth will use $12 million from the National Institutes of Health award to focus on several areas in Texas, including San Antonio.

“HSC is committed to leading the way in creating solutions to address health disparities that affect members of underrepresented and diverse communities,” Health Science Center President Dr. Michael Williams said in a news release. “COVID-19’s disproportionate impact has shined a bright light on the need for more partnerships and resources to solve these disparities.”

Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, Hidalgo and Harris counties will all receive focus as part of the award, which will go toward outreach and engagement efforts in ethnic and racial minority communities that were severely impacted by COVID-19.

“With strong interest and commitment from academic and community partners, the Texas CEAL team came together rather quickly to address the urgent national need to diversify the clinical trial participation in development of COVID-19 therapeutics and vaccines,” Texas Community Engagement Alliance Consortium's Jamboor Vishwanatha said.
