Boerne Mayor Tim Handren has reached an agreement with Kendall County Judge Darrel Lux that will make mask wear mandatory in government facilities and even in some large retailers.

The decision, announced by the city, affects H-E-B, Walmart, Home Depot and Loves Travel Stop. In addition, both officials are also asking smaller retailers to voluntarily require their customers to wear masks.

Handren discussed the decision on social media regarding the city’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, noting as well that the county has not had any recent change in the number of coronavirus cases.

As of July 11, Texas reported 250,462 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 3,112 deaths. Kendall County has 101 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Handren said that after Bexar County and the City of San Antonio ordered all businesses to require customers to wear masks, he received multiple inquiries regarding whether Kendall County had similar plans.

Handren said part of the reason for the decision to require masks in the large stores was due to reports San Antonio residents – where infection rates are higher – were coming to Kendall County stores to avoid wearing masks.
