SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County property owners who are owed tax refund checks for overpayments or adjustments will soon see those checks in the mail as the county tax assessor-collector tries to help residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our staff has been working vigorously to generate and mail out approximately 4,000 overpayment and adjustment refund checks to property owners this week,” Albert Uresti, Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector, said in an April 7 news release

“With an unprecedented increase in unemployment, layoffs, and reduction of hours, these refund disbursements could not be coming at a better time.”

Although the Office of the Tax Assessor-Collector has closed lobbies to the public, employees continue to provide motor vehicle and property tax services so that refunds aren’t delayed. More than 22 million Americans have filed unemployment claims in the past four weeks.

“Our goal is to put this money back in the pockets of property owners who may need it most,” Uresti said. “The changes in these measures reflect the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and efforts to contain it."

In March, the Office of the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector asked for a halt to delinquent property tax sales in April and May, according to a March 18 news release.

“The tax assessor-collector’s office wants to help our citizens through this difficult time, so I am therefore, instructing the Linebarger Tax Attorney Law Firm to work with the sheriff’s office and cancel all delinquent property tax foreclosure sales for the months of April and May,” Uresti said.

The Office of the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector emphasized its mission in the April 7  release is “to help keep families in their homes with an emphasis on helping our senior citizens, our disabled, our veterans, and ultimately our children.”
